My take on it was that the monsters aren't what they had to be afraid of, and that the man's sometimes overly-aggressive nature was far more corrosive and self-destructive.

As for the acting and so on, almost all of the film was improvised with a loose outline for the actors to work from and the two stars are the only actual actors in it. Since it was shot with a tiny budget on location (being from Houston, seeing nearby hurricane-ravaged Galveston on film was still shocking to me) and all of the visual effects were composed basically on a laptop, I thought it was great example of resourcefulness by director Gareth Edwards and a decent effort that tried to do something more than a typical cheesy Syfy flick.

Re: Film Feuds 021: Selling Out

I watched Monsters yesterday, and I won't give anything away, but I was really disappointed. I'll talk more about it on Episode 23, but the best 5 minutes are the first 5 minutes.

Re: Film Feuds 021: Selling Out

The first five minutes of Monsters was enough to convince my wife that we should watch the whole thing, which was a huge surprise to me. I left it in my Netflix queue, so we'll definitely get around to it sometime. The fact that you called it "cerebral" is really intriguing to me. But the acting has got to be terrible, right? That much was evident in the first five minutes.

Re: Film Feuds 021: Selling Out

I don't want to spoil, but the first five minutes of Monsters (especially the opening sequence) aren't indicative of the rest of the film. It's a more cerebral take on a giant monster movie and it's more about some quiet emotional payoffs than big special effects or action sequences. I really liked it, and I'd suggest you give it a full watch, but don't be misled by those first five minutes. And don't get hung up on the timeframe. It doesn't matter at all.

Re: Film Feuds Episode 007: Johnny Drama and Michael Moore

No problem, any time. We, uh, did that on purpose to see if anyone, uh, would figure it out.
Interesting that he broke up the production with What Lies Beneath. That movie was sub-par in my opinion, and I wonder if was affected by all of the awesome Castaway stuff going through his mind. I know that sometimes when I am working on two things at once, it is terribly hard to balance both of them.

As for Bowie, Space Oddity is probably my favorite. Alex is just a kid.

Re: Film Feuds 011: Creepy Edition

Just wanted to point out that Ron Howard didn't direct Cast Away. That was Robert Zemeckis, who (fun fact) broke production for a few months and directed What Lies Beneath while Tom Hanks lost all that weight.

And I don't get the David Bowie hate, but it might not bode well for your musical tastes if your favorite Bowie song was written by Queen and from a Queen album. :D

Re: Film Feuds 011: Creepy Edition

Yep, we'll be putting one up today for this week's episode!

Re: Film Feuds 011: Creepy Edition

So are odd couple polls making a comeback? It's on Netflix watch now, so maybe I'll catch it on there.

We did talk a lot about martial arts foreign films, but are there any foreign movies in other genres you like? I'm trying to broaden my horizons.

Re: Film Feuds Episode 006: The Last Time Warren Jumped

Ip Man - 2008 semi-biographical Hong Kong film about "Ip Man", the eventual mentor to Bruce Lee. The movie takes place in Foshan, China, during the Japanese occupation of China in World War II. You have to see this one scene where the martial arts master cuts loose after a series of slights and tragedies at the hands of the Japanese authorities.

Re: Film Feuds Episode 004: Alex’s Brother, Where Art Thou?

When I was dating my now-wife, my roommate bared resemblance to Nic Cage. For a long time I didn't want her to meet him because I was afraid she'd fall for him! I eventually let them meet and she said she didn't even see the doppelganger in him. Big sigh of relief.

Re: Film Feuds Episode 004: Alex’s Brother, Where Art Thou?

Oddly enough, my wife is the same way with Nicholas Cage and Con-Air. Everything comes back to that somehow. It happened just the other day when we were watching Burn After Reading (which you also mentioned) and I had to point out Malkovich the same way. "That's Cyrus the Virus! Remember?"

Fun show, guys!
